What It May Cost You

The last thing on your mind if you are ever unlucky enough to be in a situation where you have to acquit your firearm in self-defense, it’s what is going to happen afterward that may worry you.

Even if you’re a good shooter or the bad guy that doesn’t want to take any chances and decides to escape, you’ll still be left holding the bag when the police arrive.

Regardless of whether if the police think it’s a clean shooting, it’s something that needs to be dealt with in court by a jury, which means it will include court fees, attorneys’ fees, and all the other “fun stuff” that comes with it.

Unless you’ve got an emergency day fund for this exact purpose, then CCW insurance is usually the way to go. And for your information, that rainy day fund can go towards extra guns and ammo instead. We’re just saying here and now, so…

Looking Into Major Insurance Packages

insurance

For our comparison, we’ve picked some of the leading players in the CCW insurance field to cover.  Even with the statistics, we go over within this article, there are some pieces of information that we didn’t include.

We didn’t list out the services that every company provides, like 24/7 customer support, and having higher tiers of insurance that come with additional coverage (and fees), since it’s basically the same across the board.

For obvious reasons, as soon as you’ve settled on the 2 or 3 policies you may want to go with, it’s always a good idea to check out the information from those specific suppliers and take a good look at all of the things that come with the policies to see which one best suits you and your needs.

What You Should Look For

While everyone’s got their own criteria on what is most important to them in an insurance policy, at the very least, information like how much you will be covered for in a civil trial or a criminal trial should be covered.

With it should also come how much of the bail amount is covered should be right at the top of all of our criteria lists.

At the same time, keep in mind that our evaluation looks at the lowest tiers for each company, so there is always a choice to upgrade for more money to get that extra coverage you are looking for. With that being said, let’s get started with the list!

The Best Concealed Carry Insurance – Mini List

  1. USCCA

USCCA LO

One of the leading CCW insurance providers on the playing field, USCCA has been providing CCW insurance for a very long time.

And with that time, comes experience. For obvious reasons, no policy is perfect, and there are some slight problems to the offerings by USCCA.

Advantages

Being a big name in the CCW insurance scene and an established company comes with benefits. Like providing coverage in the entire USA as part of all of their policies, even at the lowest level.

Another big draw for USCCA is the fact their coverage is for every and all legal weapons you may use in self-defense.

That means even if you cannot get to your gun in time for reasons that are their own, and you had to resort to using a kitchen knife instead, then you will still be covered by USCCA.

Disadvantages

For your criminal defense, the coverage limit basically factors in the bail bond amount, and right off the bat, your bail will eat right into that fund.

For obvious reasons, it’s less of a problem if you go with a higher tier that offers a larger coverage amount, but then you’re also paying more money for your insurance at that point.

Also, something that came out lately is that there are a few states where you can’t get coverage. Namely: New York, New Jersey, and Washington.

The figures for USCCA:

Monthly cost (“premium”) – $22 per month

Civil defense coverage limit – $500,000

Criminal defense coverage limit – $100,000

  1. CCW Safe

CCW-Safe

While it is not as big as USCCA or NRA Carry Guard, CCW Safe is a quite established and time-tested CCW coverage plan.

It also has a pretty good variety of attorneys to represent you if you ever end up in court (hopefully you wouldn’t need to), including the attorney who defended this one man named George Zimmerman.  You may have heard of him.

Advantages

One of the biggest advantages for CCW Safe is that there is no limit on the amount of criminal or civil defense matters you are covered for.

Now, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t worry when using your firearm since you should only ever use it at the shooting range or for self-defense purposes.

It’s just the policy of CCW Safe to offer as much coverage as you require, not as much as they’re willing to budget.

Of course, an unlimited defense budget only makes sense if they pay for everything else upfront.  Fortunately for you, they’re not psychos and don’t require a compensation method of payment, so you won’t have to worry about paying for any of your civil or criminal defense charges at all.

Last but not least, CCW Safe is the only company we came across that offers a plan specifically for those who only want to be covered for self-defense in their homes.

If you don’t plan to or can’t carry outside your home, then you can sign up for their Home Defence plan. The Home Defence plan provides the same coverage, just limited to your home.

Disadvantages

While close to being one of the perfect plans, there is one major downside to CCW Safe policies. You should have (and is mandatory) a CCW permit in order to sign up with CCW Safe or live in a state where a permit is not needed.  Otherwise, you will only be able to sign up for their Home Defense plan.

The figures for CCW Safe:

Monthly cost – $22 per month

Civil defense coverage limit – no limit

Criminal defense coverage limit – no limit

  1. US and Texas Law Shield

Does size really matter? Mom joke, but you get it.

Really though, even though US & TX Law Shield is one of the smaller companies in the CCW insurance game, US & TX Law Shield offers a relatively modest plan, at very competitive prices.

With that lower price, however, are some compromises.

Advantages

You’d think a smaller company with lower prices will not be able to (or have a hard time) compete with the big boys at all.  And you’d be dead wrong. Despite their minute size, US & TX Law Shield actually has 0 limits on their civil or criminal defense coverage, beyond the offerings from companies like USCCA and NRA Carry Guard.

What more, the payments are made upfront, so you don’t need to worry about waiting for compensations on attorneys’ fees while you’re busy planning your legal defense.

Disadvantages

The lower cost has to be fabricated somewhere, right?  With the cheaper contribution from US & TX Law Shield, their basic plan offers absolutely no lost wages compensation, and there are additional charges stacked on to the plan if you want to have bail coverage or have your policy effective all over the entire US.

It’s basically a way to tailor your plan to fit your needs, though after adding back in all the coverage offered as part of a standard policy by the other companies, you may end up paying about the same anyway.

The figures for US & TX Law Shield.

Getting down to the basics, here’s where US & TX Law Shield means in its basic figures:

Monthly cost – $10.95 per month

Civil defense coverage limit – no limit

Criminal defense coverage limit – no limit

  1. Second Call Defense

Second-Call-Defense

Not the last call, but the second call (bad pun intended), Second Call Defense sits right in the middle of the big-name companies and the much smaller-sized ones, offering decent coverage limits. Which aren’t exactly the best, but they are also not the worst.

Advantages

Like some of the better plans, Second Call Defense provides upfront payments of all your covered fees. Covered fees such as attorneys’ fees, so you don’t have to shell out the money yourself for bail or during your trial.  The coverage also ranks quite high up there with the big boys and covers the entire US in their standard plan.

Disadvantages

As a mid-tier offering, the criminal defense coverage is on the lower end, as is its bail amount. For obvious reasons, this is pretty much expected going in, with its pricing being lower than the bigger name companies but higher than the bottom tier priced competitors.

The figures for Second Call Defence:

With nothing astounding here as a middle-of-the-road offering, Second Call Defence numbers look like this:

Monthly cost – $14.95 per month

Civil defense coverage limit – $500,000

Criminal defense coverage limit – $50,000

  1. Armed Citizens Defense League Network

ad473ad1-8bc6-4641-9d5d-9e416a20c217

The Armed Citizen Legal Defense Network offers quite low in its monthly rates, unlimited coverage, and you can choose your own attorney.

On those statistics alone, even without a per diem payment, they are a feasible choice for concealed carry insurance.

However, there are nowhere near the benefits and resources of an organization as vigorous as USCCA.

At the same time, there’s a bit of fine print to their unlimited coverage: they only cover up to 1/2 of their defense fund. Currently, the defense fund is big enough that they can cover more than any other fixed amount, but that may not seem to be the case.

Conclusion

Are you still asking the question “which is the best CCW insurance provider?” And this is where you get the favorite answer of lawyers everywhere: it depends.  While it seems like a cop-out, it really does depend on what you are looking for, and what you think you’ll need.

USCCA, of course, is certainly the most well-known CCW insurance provider, so you can’t really go wrong with a CCW policy from them. It’s also nice that their plans cover all kinds of legal weapons, while most other plans only focus mainly on firearms.

You never know when your pistol may jam and you may need to grab a 9-iron to knock the assailant out.

Personally, we feel that CCW Safe is the best one for your regular Joe, as it’s got a proven track record with their stellar attorneys in some big-name trials, and no limit on the civil or criminal defense coverage numbers.

As an added bonus, they offer a Home Defense choice for our brothers stuck behind firing lines who aren’t allowed to use their firearms outside their home

  1. My problem with USCCA lay in the very real possiblity that you lose your case either in criminal or civil court…….this can leave you on the hook to pay back USCCA so your life after a shooting could indeed be bleak
I also find that the many success stories that CCW provides is a real testimony to protection…..most importantly they are NOT an insurance company
